Reflections of a Teacher and Learner: My Take on the Unplugged/Dogme/Coursebook Debate

Reflections of a Teacher and Learner: My Take on the Unplugged/Dogme/Coursebook Debate

Here is a link to another blog from a teacher, discussing the use of textbooks in the language classroom. I discussed my thoughts on the issue in a comment left at the site.

Discussion on TPRS

For those who are unfamiliar with the teaching strategy of TPRS (Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling), it is pretty self-explanatory.  It is a way of "thinking outside the book" as a method of teaching language.  On her site for Spanish and Literacy (click here), Ms. Seydlitz discusses the issue and I have responded.

Shimmering Literacies and Using Popular Culture in teaching Literacy

Shimmering Literacies by Bronwyn T. Williams is a book that discusses using pop culture and technology in the classroom.

The author discusses social networking, video games, and other technology.  These things may become outdated in the future, but are relevant today, because these are the things that interest students.  The author claims that using these technologies is a good approach to teaching.

As literacy is the ability to interpret and understand a variety of texts, it is important for teachers to "practice what they preach"  and expand their own literacy into the forms of text that interest students.  There are benefits to using this strategy.  Students know how they learn.  They know what they like.  By using a variety of approaches to teaching, one approaches a variety of intelligences for diverse learners.  For this reason, it is also crucial to get to know your students and be aware of what is going on in their lives.  However, most teachers know that they should be doing this anyway.

Pop culture is very much alive in every aspect of our lives, so why should we not expect it to be an influence in our classrooms as well?  One strategy for incorporating pop culture in the lesson is by giving the students the opportunity to gain credit (pop culture points) for finding content from the classroom instruction in other media they encounter.

I feel that this is a good way to approach teaching.  By tapping into resources that interest students, teachers can be very successful in teaching their content areas.

Wilkommen! How Blogging can Enhance Literacy

Thank you for visiting my new site.  The purpose of this site is to share resources and information on literacy, more specifically in the field of foreign language learning.  This site will help the reader to connect with bloggers both in and outside the field of foreign language learning.  On the right side I have provided a list of such sites. Since literacy is crucial to language learning, there is a constant need for such resources.

I plan to focus on literacy in my classroom.  Because it is a language learning class, literacy is very important.  I plan to implement many strategies in my lessons that cater to different types of learners and approach the multiple intelligences, in order to help all of my students to succeed in becoming language learners and world citizens.

As part of this effort, I have created this blog to allow students, parents, and teachers to access a wealth of literacy strategies and contribute to the growing effort to promote literacy everywhere.  This blog may serve as a means to share information and ideas, as well as a place for students to comment on things we are doing in the classroom.

On a side note, be sure to visit my other site for resources in German language learning.
